The first level of fortification: The voices inside our own heads

We are in the middle of a war-like situation. Nobody is left unaffected by the ravages of the Covid-19 virus. The country is facing a cross-geography crisis. Many of us are in lockdown, some of us, in places away from our families. Some of us have already been directly affected by the virus.

The bad news: None of us here have an experiential understanding on how to deal with this.

The good news: There is a mental model. Stockdale Paradox, which is written about quite a lot, is highly relevant to our lives today. It takes a little while to grasp in its entirety, and also takes, as someone described it, a few mental and linguistic jumping jacks.


This mental model is not new. In other forms, Viktor Frankl has written about it in his seminal work, Man’s Search for Meaning (“An abnormal reaction to an abnormal situation is normal behavior.” “Those who have a ‘why’ to live can bear with almost any ‘how’.” “Our greatest freedom is the freedom to choose our attitude.”, to quote a few) This is also the stoic philosophy of building emotional endurance. It finds mention in different words and languages in most faiths of the world.
